And as I navigated through my own experiences with back pain, postpartum body changes, motherhood and running 2 businesses - I gradually was forced to shift my own workouts & eating habits too.
These changes, coupled with my own mindfulness journey (which initially was only to save my sanity from getting caught in the rat race), led me to discover a much simpler way of staying fit & healthy - that involved way less obsessing over burning calories and restricting carbs.

When I decided to invest in myself by hiring a personal trainer, I knew I was searching for a "unicorn". It was important to me to find someone who was not going to promote diet culture, but would instead take a holistic approach. I wanted someone who understood the mind/body connection and how imperative it would be to have the two work together in unity. I honestly didn't think a trainer like Mel existed. Yes - the reason why most exercise and diet programs don't work is that there is zero discussion of how to actually change your habits. No one needs more information on diet and exercise. You can Google or ChatGPT anything! The real reason people struggle to change is the underlying mental habits stopping you from doing the things you say you want to do.
This is the same reason why simply taking you through workouts doesn't change anything either - you still will have all the same self-sabotage preventing you from doing workouts outside of our sessions, you'll still struggle with overeating or restricting/bingeing, and all your hard work in our workouts goes to waste.
Instead - we have 1 coaching session per week to change your food & exercise habits, and 1 personal training session that teaches you proper form, progresses your plans, and makes sure you are doing everything as effectively as possible outside of our sessions together.
If you'd like to add on additional personal training sessions in the beginning, for greater accountability and feeling like you're making progress faster, we can absolutely do that. We can create a package that works best for you. Plus, some people just really enjoy working with a personal trainer! However - if you've really struggled to make changes over the years, we need to have at least 1 coaching session per week. This is non-negotiable and if this doesn't make sense to you, we're probably not the right fit!
I work with clients both in-person in Carlsbad, CA (in-home personal training) and online. Most clients love the flexibility of doing some sessions virtually as well, when there is travel or busy schedules.
For online personal training sessions - I've done personal training online for 5 years, and it works extremely well for this type of program. This is because our physical work together is primarily about teaching you what to do (proper form, technique, other exercise fundamentals to increase effectiveness, structure of workouts, etc.) so you can successfully exercise on your own - in between our sessions together. Because no one works with a personal trainer every single day, unless you're some elite athlete! This format means you can truly learn how to make this a lasting lifestyle for yourself.
This depends on your body and current habits, however, everyone who implements what we discuss can expect to see changes in their body composition.
For some, this can mean losing 10-15 lbs.
For others, your jeans fit differently while the scale doesn't change that much because you've gained muscle.
If this bothers you and you need a guarantee of quick weight loss, we need to address this. If we don't, you'll stay in the same trap of needing a quick fix and never working towards truly changing your lifestyle and habits for good. People who see results are in it for the long run - that's why they get the results!
If you're only in it it if you see results in the first 5 days, you'll give up quickly and end up back in the same position. We will work to find your reason that will keep you going no matter what - and this is exactly what will create your results.
What do we do after the 3 months?
Most clients continue on a maintenance plan. This usually means we decrease the frequency with which we meet, but we discuss this together to find the best solution that works for you. This also means less of a monthly investment, which works well for most people in the long run.
Other clients simply enjoy our sessions so much and see the added value of continued accountability & coaching, so they stay on a similar program and want to get more personal training sessions in together once we've done more of the foundational coaching work.
For in-person clients in North County San Diego, I can provide equipment that I bring to your home.
In general, my philosophy is simplicity = consistency = results. The reason most people struggle to exercise consistently is that they put it on a pedestal of needing to be some perfect gym workout - yet the reality is for most people that they have a busy and inconsistent schedule, as well as inconsistent energy!
Therefore, I teach a lot of simple, bodyweight, at home workouts that can be done on the go while traveling as well. Coupled with that, of course, are workouts that may utilize some weights or resistance bands or other equipment to progress your results when you are ready. Most people assume strength training means weight training - but this includes your own bodyweight. Therefore, in general, in order to start seeing results, you do not need equipment beyond maybe 1 set of dumbbells and resistance bands. We will discuss this together based off your goals and lifestyle.
This is the whole point of the program - finding a sustainable rhythm of taking care of your body/self in a way that works for your lifestyle. Thus, there’s no “set” amount of time, rather, we will be crafting what works for you together over the course of the program - depending on your lifestyle and goals. For some people this may look like 10-30 mins/day, or for others 60 mins/day, some people 3 days per week, some people 7 days a week ;).
Trust the process - it has to fit your lifestyle and feel sustainable, otherwise, you'll be back to ground zero yet again.
I get it, we've all felt like "ahhh can this really work for ME?" These are the exact beliefs that have been keeping your desired body/relationship with your body at arms length for you - AND how these are the exact beliefs we will work to heal, so you can finally experience the change you desire.
Secondly - resistance is a normal and EXPECTED part of the process. This is why we utilize mindfulness - to quiet this self-sabotage. This is simply your brain literally attempting to conserve energy, maintain the status quo + familiarity. Just know that feeling resistance means you're barking up the right tree. If it felt familiar + easy, it would mean you already knew how to do all of this, and wouldn't need it!
The real key to finally changing food/exercise/life habits is learning how to take action in the face of resistance. This is something we actively address in depth - so that you are no longer in the habit of listening to your mind's resistance, and instead, learn how to listen to your body, to finally move you forward.
